The Dead I Know is a novel by Scot Gardner that details a period in protagonist Aaron Rowe's life as he deals with the grief of his past, the dementia of his grandmother Mam and a new job at a funeral parlor. Aaron must learn to deal with meeting new people and the changes in his life as he feels his life spiralilng out of control.

Aaron learns to confront both his past and the grief that once consumed him and becomes happy to embrace the changes that are occurring around him.

Characters[]

Aaron Rowe:
The protagonist and of the narrator of the novel. At the beginning of the text Aaron begins working for Mr Barton as a Funeral Director. He is described by Mr Barton as 'tall, dark and handsome... with an emphasis on dark.' Initially ,Aaron is a reluctant narrator and character, who is hesitant to confront his grief and the world around him. Throughout the text Aaron must learn to confront his past and grief by actively communicating with those around him. This grief is frequently alluded to by the sleeping walking and nightmare episodes that lead to waking up in some compromising locations. Aaron lives with his grandmother Mam, a character who is suffering from increasingly serious dementia. Aaron feels a sense of comfort and stability in Mam's presence and does not want to confront the change of her being taken away from him. He eventually learns to reconcile his fear of change and recognize that seeking assistance and sympathy from others can often have positive outcomes. And negative

John Barton:
John Barton is the kindly funeral director who provides Aaron with employment at the beginning of the novel and who becomes a father figure and source of security for Aaron throughout the text. John Barton experienced the death of his son before the beginning of the novel and has been able to overcome this grief by constantly surrounding himself with death and through communicating with those around him. Mr Barton is described as outside 'always dark but happy underneath,' he is an extremely empathetic and caring character who assists Aaron character growth throughout the novel.
